Are You Ready to Cross?

What Is Love – Eros

6Are not five sparrows sold for two copper coins? Yet not one of them has [ever] been forgotten in the presence of God. 7Indeed the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not be afraid; you are far more valuable than many sparrows.

Luke 12:6-7 AMP

What is love? What love go to do with it? Show me you love me? These are a couple of quotes that we hear in culture, especially music that claims to depict romance. Eros is the Greek form of intimate, physical, sexual love. Now the Bible mentions Eros love in multiple examples to include Adam and Eve (Genesis 2), King David and Bathsheba (2 Samuel 12:24-25), and King Solomon (Song of Solomon). I have no need to describe what Eros love is to look like biblically between husband and wife, but I would like to instead take a moment to explore how God demonstrates Eros love, or better intimacy with us.

Intimacy – closeness of observation or knowledge of a subject:

We must first define something in order to understand what it is and isn’t. The aspect of Eros that I want to explore with you is intimacy. In culture intimacy almost always equals sex, but the actual definition of intimacy is closeness. A foundational component of relationships, and God’s desire in his relationship with us, is closeness. How do we develop intimacy with God? God has given us his word, the Bible, with contains his promise, standards, and commands. The Bible is a manual and instructional piece on how we can develop closeness with God and get to know him. As we spend time in his word, we can begin to recognize God’s voice and direction in/for our lives.

How Do We Develop Intimacy With God

God is clear in his word on the ways that we can get close to him and open our hearts and minds to allow him to enter us. I want to give you some verses to read as you journey to develop a stronger relationship with God.

  • Deuteronomy 11:13-25
  • Joshua 1:5-9
  • 1 Samuel 15:22
  • Proverbs 3:5-12
  • Matthew 11:28-30

Reflection Time

Do you feel close to God? Are you willing to exercise the disciplines that are required to maintain a close and intimate relationship with God? Do you desire an authentic, and close relationship with God?
